Can Housing Societies Ban Pets in India?🐾

Short answer:No, they can’t.

Under the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) guidelines and multiple High Court judgments, residential welfare associations (RWAs) cannot impose a blanket ban on pets.

What’s allowed?

  • Framing reasonable rules for hygiene and pet behavior.

What’s NOT allowed?

  • Forcing you to give up your pet.

  • Restricting pets from common areas or mandating service lifts only.

Why?
Owning a pet is protected under Article 21 – Right to Life. Harassing pet owners can lead to police complaints and legal action.

📌 Bottom line: Pets are family. The law stands with you.
